My students need books in their lives and things to really call their own. The books are ones they can relate to in their situations and have a lot to teach.
My students have generally had negative or limited experiences with school and almost all of them are a couple of grade levels behind. They study English, Math, Science and Social Studies and earn credits while they are in our care.
My students are in the custody of the state and attend my class anywhere from a few days to a few months.
The students range from twelve years of age to eighteen and are with me all day. They are in transition and generally waiting for a foster family or room in a program. Often, they come to me after being in a youth detention facility or a foster family that didn't work or after completion of a drug or behavior program.
The class is generally fifteen or fewer students, but with the turnover I teach about 150 students each school year. Some of them return several times and bring with them new and varied experiences. Unfortunately for some of them, being in the system is the only normal they know. Hopefully in the time with me they can have a positive school experience and positive interactions with adults.
My Project
When my students leave they are usually heading to a new foster home or a new program. This usually includes starting a new school and learning how to live with new people. With this change, there is often a lot of anxiety and fear. When my students leave they often ask for one of my books that they are currently reading or the book we are reading together.
I never say no to a student request for a book, a quote or name in vinyl or a journal to take with them.
For the girls, I also let them choose some makeup items and for the boys a piece of clothing. It is not much, but I really want to help them feel good before they go. The last thing I do is write them a note to take as they go.
