My school is a public charter school providing students (learners) in grades 6-8 a hands-on STEAM, aerospace-focused, and project-based curriculum. We are the first school in the nation to be located right at an airport in Englewood, Colorado. Our learners come from all over the Denver area, from Franktown to Aurora to Arvada and beyond. This diversity brings different perspectives to our classrooms. Some of our learners have been homeschooled and some are just looking for a different type of school and have found their home at CSA!
Our learners are creative thinkers and very excited about learning!
Our curriculum focuses on core academic competencies, in addition to key focus areas that will prepare learners for promising careers in aerospace and technology. I will be team teaching with the science teacher to provide this PE elective in addition to teaching Exploratory/STEAM.
My Project
Encouraging girls and all learners to run is very important for middle schoolers.
They need to be active and connect in a fun way.
Our school has more boys than girls, so promoting girls running and girls' fitness, in general, is very important. The girls at the school can run during recess, PE, and team up after school as well. We have a loop around our school near the airport hanger to be used to track how long it takes students to run a mile and to shoot to improve their score. Setting goals and reaching them is HUGE inside and outside of the classroom. Running shoes are needed too.
During remote learning and over breaks, students will track running after setting goals. It’s hard for them to do physical activity when they are remote learning for PE. Setting goals and showing that they have been running will be very important and they will be rewarded with gift cards when they reach their goal. As a girls running club we will set goals and decide at which points they will be rewarded. Student buy-in is huge! The bracelets will be used at each checkpoint. For example, they get a yellow bracelet once they meet their first goal (maybe 20 miles), then a pink bracelet once they run 40 miles, etc., and a gift card at their half way point or the end goal.
Water bottles & snacks will keep the girls hydrated and fueled while running. The gift cards will be used to reward students for positive behaviors and reaching goals during running competitions in person and while at home. Modeling positive expected behaviors and rewarding when seen helps promote our positive healthy school culture.
