Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work at an alternative school. The thing I love the most about my students is the diversity in our class. I teach students from different countries as well as students on different educational levels. Some can be on a second-grade reading level while others are in the top 97th percentile in the nation. They are all very unique and incredibly funny. There is never a quiet day, and they always give me a reason to smile every day. They have a desire to learn and enjoy reading, but we do not have a library. I hope to give them that.
My Project
I am a teacher at an alternative school, and I am always aiming at getting kids to open up and discuss their reading/learning with their teammates. There is no "I" in team, so it has been said, but what about the student who needs something very specific in order to be successful?
I like to believe that I provide the most sought after books for my students, but what happens when you have those students that nothing catches their attention?
Do they let their team down because they can't partake in discussion? Are they hiding the fact that they are a low reader? Or are they unique and meant to be treated as an individual within their team?
This year I bought four books that focused on child abuse, teen crime, gang life, and immigration. The following week I had to order four of each book because I had students fighting over them. Students who never spoke during discussion opened up so much that other kids wanted to read their book, leading me to have to purchase more of the same books.
Four books is all it took. Four unique books that dealt with difficult situations no teacher would want their students to experience. This is my third time on DonorsChoose and I am praying for a miracle because we have more diversity than imagined: immigrants, gangs, broken homes, abuse, trauma, mental illness, etc. The list goes on and on.
These books were chosen specifically to appeal to students who have suffered and may still be suffering due to their experiences. My goal is that they will relate their experiences to another's, be able to communicate their problems and trauma, and find hope for their future.
