This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students attend an urban public school in Oklahoma that serves grades 7-12. 85% of our students receive a free or reduced-price lunch. My students represent a lower middle class area and most are in single parent homes or live with grandparents.
My older students want to create a unit of study for kids in the lower grades over the importance of kindness in the hope of changing the culture of our school and makeing it a better place to attend school.
My Project
My school serves grades 7-12. My junior and senior students one day made a comment about how hard it was to be a middle school student because of how mean everyone was to one another. I asked them if they had read the novel "Wonder". Many said they had and commented that the middle school students needed to read that book. I got with the 7th and 8th grade English teachers and asked if it was something they could have the students read. They were excited to fit into their curriculum. I told the older kids that if I could get the books they would have them read it. That did not seem to satisfy them. They wanted more. They come up with having a "Kindness Week". Poster making, guest speakers, random acts of kindness, and school service were just a few of the activities they want to implement in conjunction with the reading of the novel.
