Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is filled with 28 diverse students. There are children with different cultural backgrounds, who speak a wide set of languages. My students all have challenges at home, whether it be economical, or social-emotional challenges. Despite these challenges, these students come to school and are ready to learn. They come with a smile on their face and are eager to learn. All of my students are able to face adversity and still succeed. That is a quality that makes them unique. Their level of perseverance and determination is unwavering, and that is a quality I admire about them.
My Project
Wonder is an amazing book that carries an important message on acceptance, love and friendship. My students all are immersed to a social-emotional learning curriculum in our school. My students are reminded on a daily basis to choose love and this book can help remind them of how it feels to be excluded due to one’s appearance. This book will allow my students to take a journey and observe the challenges that Auggie faces because of how he looks. It will teach them empathy and allow them to connect with the protagonist on a personal level. Unfortunately our world is a place where people are judged based on their appearance and not on their true selves. This book shatters all social norms and presents a story about a loving child whose goal in love is to fit in. Little does he know he was born to stand out. My students are exactly like Auggie. They were born to stand out.
