I would like to provide my students with an in-depth STEAM unit on printmaking where they will explore relief-printing. Throughout the 4-week unit, students will gain a greater understanding of the printmaking process and techniques by creating a three color reduction print.
The grant provides a wonderful opportunity to introduce and explore the principle techniques of printmaking and provides a strong foundation for other printmaking techniques such as woodcut, intaglio, etching, lithography, collagraph, and monoprint/monotype.
The STEAM printmaking unit will build a stronger foundation for the art program by providing another creative platform for expression. It can help spark students’ creativity and build greater interest in engineering due to the sequencing of color and the precision of registering each print. It will also help differentiate our art students from other local and regional art programs by expanding their awareness of STEAM and the visual arts. Many schools do not offer this type of project because it is costly, messy, and extremely technical..
Moreover, enriching our students’ lives with STEAM and with more technical experiences provides greater knowledge and empowers them to implement various techniques to satisfy their artistic expression.
Goals:
For my students to apply the Elements and Principles of art to techniques used in relief printmaking.
For students to experiment and be inspired with the printmaking process and use problem solving and divergent thinking skills such as creativity, analysis, and decision making.
For our school to expand the visual arts curriculum by offering a printmaking class.
To differentiate our art students from other art students in the greater community and the region.
The printmaking unit would encourage collaboration and information sharing among art teachers in the district. Additionally, materials purchased with the grant will be shared with other art students for the next five years
