My students are a group of individuals who represent a typical rural community in Northeast Georgia. Many of my students do not have the means to purchase their own supplies, as our school is a Title I School. Our middle school is an integral piece of the community because our students depend on ways that the school can help them.
My students do not let their circumstances dictate their life choices, instead they come to school ready to learn so that they can make a difference in the world.
My students believe in the power of education and the way that education can effect change in individuals, families, and communities because they have seen this change happen in their own lives. I am encouraged every day by their hard work and endurance.
My Project
These materials will make a difference in my students' learning because they will be able to finish series books that they love and begin new series books by authors they have not met yet. They will grow to love the characters in their novels and find that the themes resonate with their own lives. Our titles include Roller Girl, Stamped, Extraordinary Means, Side Effects May Vary, and Dear Evan Hansen. Students will be able to read these books for pleasure, for research projects, for literary essays, book comprehension competitions, and Socratic discussions.
Because of the belonging they find in these books, my students will be better equipped to be their truest selves.
Having new books for our 8th grade library will allow our students to see that they are valued, accepted, and powerful because they will see characters like them who are valued, accepted, and powerful in their books.
