Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a Title I school. It's less than ten miles away from the border in Southern California. Our students come from low-income households and our school provides free breakfast and lunch to all of our scholars.
My students are a highly motivated group of fifth and sixth graders who are eager to learn.
They are inquisitive and love to help and motivate each other. They are kind-hearted and cheer for each other. They have hard-working parents, but are struggling financially. The majority of my students are English Language Learners. For many of them, school is not only a place to learn, but it's also a place where they can feel safe and secure.
My Project
The set of Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli will be used in the classroom for our book clubs, read aloud, and for independent reading. As I meet with my reading groups, we can practice how to annotate and use reading strategies that will help enhance their comprehension skills. Furthermore, Maniac Magee touches several themes. Among them, homelessness and racism. Our school, located in a high-need community and significant number of immigrants, which made these themes relevant. These are important topics that students need to be socially aware. Awareness will lead to empathy and understanding. With your support, I can help build my students' reading comprehension and character.
