Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a level four low income middle school. We are stressed out and tested out. I push my kids hard and they never fail in performing to high expectations. I like to combat the stress levels by having fun and engaging reading projects where they have the opportunity to read books that they help choose and that they enjoy. These types of reading projects always engage the kids because they enjoy having input when selecting their reading materials. The students are always committed to the reading and writing projects and enjoy sharing what they're reading with other teachers, students, and admin. I love that they are fully invested in class and I love that they enjoy reading, writing, and creating.
My Project
Continuing to build on our Art of a Nation project, students will be switching gears to a new book and continue to stretch their writing by using the Painless Vocabulary and Writing series to improve their skills.
By reading "It's Kind of a Funny Story", students will learn how to craft engaging and entertaining characters.
They will begin to learn the value of keeping a reading journal where they can react to what they're reading as well as record ideas and inspiration.
They will use the Post It Easel pad and name tags to draw and create their own three dimensional characters while analyzing what makes a good character. They will learn about the different kinds of characters in fiction and how they all work together to move along the plot.
