I teach 8th grade, meaning that I teach kids with sass, eloquence, sarcasm, drive, and total uniqueness. I get to spend my days with hormone driven, confused young adults and it is absolutely amazing.
My students are passionate and interesting; they are unique individuals who are trying to figure out life one day at a time.
Though my kids are approaching high school, they are still kids! They need to wiggle and move; they need to play and explore. They need to have the opportunity to be kids.
My students have worked hard over the past year to develop into better versions of themselves, but they still need resources to take their progress to the next level.
My Project
This year, one of my students pointed out that I need to work on diversifying my books. You see, I have books about every race. I have books from other countries. I even have books written in different languages. But what they pointed out to me, is that I have few to no books that represent the LGBTQ+ community. That is a problem.
Students deserve to see themselves in literature.
They deserve to choose books that show how amazing they are and how normal their lives are. That is why we do lit circles and that is why I am asking for your support.
These books will be well needed additions to our literature circle library. They will be used in the years to come to not only show my students who are members of the LGBTQ+ community that they, too, are in literature, but also to affirm their lives and educate their peers.
