My and my fellow 10th grade teacher's students are nice kids, but reluctant readers. Unfortunately, I have heard it admitted, several times, that the last time my students read a book was in the 5th grade because they needed to rack up a certain number of AR points in order to get a pizza party. Because of this, their vocabulary has suffered as well as their literacy. For several of my students, they would be willing to read, if only they could find a book that interested them.
Most of my students are intelligent and vivacious individuals who just need to be exposed to a book they can enjoy and relate to.
With these books (Whale Talk), my students will be able to work with a novel that they can relate to and enjoy. My students do not enjoy reading, but that's because most of the books that we have at our disposal are above their reading level and outside their area of interest. When kids get frustrated, they quit. This stops the learning process dead in its tracks. By giving them this book, one which is easily comprehended and rather interesting, I will be able to conduct more meaningful and engaging discussions and group work (as I'm sure more of them will be committed to actually reading this book instead of just looking up a summary on spark notes [most of them, anyways]).
