Help me give my students a wide selection of culturally sensitive books. They need to have mirrors and mirrors in which to see themselves and others in literature- regardless fo their color, religion, or physical challenges.

My Students

The library is the heart of the school! So the library must be a vibrant, healthy, active place. A place where all students feel welcome, comfortable and want to be there. We are a K-6 elementary school, with about 430 students. Every student in out school uses the library at least once a week.

All of my students are so eager to learn!

They are interested in so many different things- everything from reading to sports, music and art. We want to make sure that every one of these students has the opportunity to become whatever they want in life- programers, artists, scientists, musicians, or athletes. Books and coding are both a big part of that!

My Project

All students should have the opportunity to use literature as both windows and mirrors.

Mirrors- This means that they can find books in our library that are mirrors- they can see themselves in their book choices- no matter what they skin color is, no matter their religion, and no matter what challenges they have to overcome.

This is so important to the self-esteem of any child.

Windows- They also need literature to be windows- the opportunity to see how others live, gain empathy, and develop cultural empathy.

These books provide many different books about children of different color, religions and challenges. Through these books, my students will be able see themselves and understand others, and develop a balanced world view.
