The Meeting Rug is the most heavily used space in the classroom, where students sit together for lessons, work in groups and read together. The wear and tear of 160 1st graders over 8 years has taken it's toll and the rug saw it's final days in June. My next class is in need of a rug to replace it!
My students are amazing six- and seven-year-olds who approach learning with enthusiasm and zest.
They love school and look forward to the structure, community, safety, and opportunity that it provides them.
The school population is linguistically and ethnically diverse. Most of the students in my 1st grade class are in the early stages of learning English as their second language with first languages varying from Cantonese, Spanish and Arabic to Haitian Creole and Somali, amongst others.
My class is in a large public inner-city elementary school in MA. It is an inclusive classroom with some students receiving Special Education services through Individualized Education Programs. Most students in the class receive free or reduced lunch.
My Project
The Meeting Rug is a large rug on which the whole class meets together every day. It's where students sit for nearly all lessons and is the only space in the classroom where the whole class can sit together in a group. When students are working independently or in small groups, after the whole class lesson, the rug is a space where I lead small group instruction for groups of students, where Math buddies engage in math skill games and activities, where students read with friends and enjoy books on their own. The Meeting Rug area is one of the most important spaces in the classroom- what happens on the Meeting Rug is at the heart of our learning community!
With your donations you contribute not only to a carpet that will prevent the students from having to sit on the cold floor or spread out in desks across the room, but also to the creation of a classroom learning space that is warm, inviting, and comfortable- a space where students will grow and learn for years to come.
Thank you in advance for helping me to create the type of learning environment my young students need to do their best learning!
