I am a first grade teacher in a title one school in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. My class is comprised of nineteen English language learners. My students learn to read and write as they learn the English Language. In September, my students were struggling. It seemed like learning English while learning how to read and write was a monumental task. With limited vocabularies, conflicting grammar from their native language and very limited help from home due to language barriers, it was a slow start. They have worked very hard and like sponges they have soaked up new English words each day. Much of their success is due to the availability of just the right books. They take home a dozen books each night. The books they read are short, very visual and sequentially build more complex language structures. While I have a tremendous amount of books for emergent readers, I could really use some help in building a library of more challenging books! I'm in awe of their passion and success this year. I would love a set of Rigby PM plus green and orange level independent readers. These books would allow my students the support of familiar characters and language structures as they become strong independent readers. We've outgrown our library!
