My students are from a wide variety of social and economic backgrounds. They come to school excited to learn new things and ask, "What are we going to do today? Often times my students would rather be at school than home over a long break.
My students need to feel safe, trust adults in school and want to be there.
They get excited when we start a new project or read a new book. They are creative and inquisitive always asking questions about what we are learning and the world around them. I love when they ask questions that connect what we are learning to the real world. One of our favorite games to play is called Stump The Teacher. The objective of this game is for the students to find something in the real world that does not have anything to do with math. They have yet to stump their teacher.
My students are full of wonder and ever since we read the book Wonder, and saw the movie, they look forward to finishing the follow up book Auggie and Me. One of my favorite things about 4th graders is watching how much they grow in a year.
My Project
Flexible seatings allows children to learn in a way that meets their own individual needs. The items I have selected will help my students learn and work in a way that will help them focus, yet move or wiggle in their space. Currently students will find a place in a corner of the room, on a bench, move a stool, relocate to a satellite seat or grab a clipboard and sit at the carpet or on a milk crate. When one of my students can move their seat to a quiet place I notice they can move away from any distractions and focus their attention on the task.
My students work best when they can wiggle in their seats, stand up at a table or a desk, sit lower to the ground, and just spread out around the room.
When they are given a choice of where to sit and on what to sit I can see their bodies relax and their attention increase. It also helps them move away from any distractions.
This project will help my student's academic success. I can already see the difference with my current room rearrangement. The wobble seats will be placed around a round table for collaborative work space or simply students who want to work without distracting others. The Giam sitting balls can be moved anywhere in the room, but will work well at a rectangular table for a group of four to work together. Wiggle cushions are great for anyone who just needs to move in their seat. These are nice because anyone can put them on their seat and get to work.
