Help me give my students pencils, newsprint paper, paint brushes, paper trays, beads, wiggly eyes, clear adhesive rolls, and spray bottles that can be used to fill our writing center.
I work in an Early Childhood Special Education classroom. Sixty percent of my students have some sort of special needs, and the other forty percent are model students. They range in age from three to five years old.
My classroom is the first school experience that many of my students will have.
Everything is new and exciting. Every day we enjoy spending time building with blocks, creating artistic masterpieces, engaging in dramatic play, and reading stories. My goal is to make our classroom a magical place that the students love to come to.
My Project
“Start writing, no matter what. The water does not flow until the faucet is turned on.”
— Louis L’Amour
I want my students to know that from the moment they pick up a pencil or a crayon, they are writers! Even if what they are "writing" doesn't look like grown up writing, it is important that they understand that the marks they put onto the paper have meaning and power. We begin building their confidence as writers by providing hands-on opportunities for them to practice their skills, from scribbling to tracing to copying to writing. In our preschool classroom, writing may look like drawing a picture with crayons, or painting letters with a paint brush. It might look like copying words from a book, or dictating to an adult about the illustrations they have created using spray bottles. It might be telling a story about a silly stick person with wiggly eyes. The materials in this project will support my students on their journey to becoming successful writers. Items, such as the paper trays and clear adhesive paper will help to keep writing materials organized within the classroom.
