My Students
"Be the type of person you want to meet," is the chant you'll hear if you walk into our room after community circle. In this room you'll find a host of talented students, they are: artists, athletes, scientists, dancers, veterinarians and writers.
When I think about how to describe my students the best word to describe them is diverse.
I have students of diverse ethnicities: Dominican, Mexican, African American, diverse personalities: timid, outgoing, jokers, and diverse learning styles: logical, musical, and kinesthetic. I have many English language learners, as well as many with special needs. They all love to learn and enjoy showing off what they know. Our school is a small school within a larger elementary school located in a high poverty inner city neighborhood. Despite many challenges my students have amazing spirits and always do their best.
My Project
Imagine a classroom where students cheer every time the teacher says "time for writing". They quickly take out their writing tool kits and folders and get to work. They can tell you exactly what stage of the writing process they are in and what steps they need to take in order to complete it. In another part of the room there is an organized center with various paper supplies and color coded pens to match the writing process. They will learn in the process that in order to be a great writer you have to be organized. My students need writing folders, pens, tablet paper and filler paper, construction and bright paper to help them draft, revise, edit and publish their writing.
My students tend to feel more empowered when they have special tools.
I try to make my students feel that with their supplies anything is possible. My third graders can be amazing writers, but just don't have the tools to help them get there. A. B. Yehoshua said, "The most difficult and complicated part of the writing process is the beginning." If I can get my students what they need to get started, they will have a chance to prove that they really do have "the write stuff."
