Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at an income-based preschool program in Phoenix, AZ. My classroom is filled with 2 diverse groups of students (we are a half-day program) including many cultures and languages and we use those differences to learn and grow from each other every day. Through the eyes of each of my students, I can see the future, and I am here to tell you, our future looks bright!
Our preschoolers are coming to school to learn academics such as ABCs and 123s but we are also building a foundation for who they might become in the future, embracing play-based learning to foster career readiness through the exploration of materials such as engineering in the block area or discovering a love of music through playing instruments and trying out different genres at the cd player.
My Project
In our classroom, we have a diverse set of centers: blocks, art, science, and more. The music center is one of our more popular centers as when the music comes on and children start to sing and dance. It is a place where, regardless of age and linguistic differences, they are one. There are smiles and laughter and by adding new instruments to this center, we can increase the educational conversations had, discussing fast and slow beats, counting the number of claps and shakes we make in each song. In a preschool room, one center typically stands out each year as being filled with endless possibilities and for us this year, that is our music center!
