Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Every morning, I wake up excited to see the sleepy faces that greet me in the halls of our school. My students are vibrant, passionate, and have tons of love to give. As one of the counselors at our school, I am lucky enough to get to guide and learn from them as they grow up. My students are culturally and linguistically diverse and many come to school with histories of trauma and the chronic stress that comes from living in poverty. Their needs are high, but their strength and resiliency is even higher.
My Project
At our school, all of our middle schoolers are drafted into one of four “Houses.” Think Harry Potter, except ours are named after famous Nobel peace prize winners: House of Mandela, House of Malala, House of Menchu, and House of Maathai. Houses compete for spirit points based on academic achievement, positive school behavior, and good attendance. These Houses have helped our student culture immensely, and now we need your help to up the spirit! Each house has a “color” associated with their team. This project will give every student a T-shirt that corresponds to their House, so that they can wear it with pride and spirit. (Note: this project funds our green, yellow, and blue shirts. We will have to find purple shirts elsewhere!)
