My Students

My students are 7 and 8-year-old, inner city students. Fifty percent are English Second Language Learners and all of them work hard! We are a family and they are excited to come, learn, and grow. This year, our school goal is to be a model urban school. Each and every day will be spent learning and experiencing new concepts and ideas. Our community is very appreciative of all we do for them and this is one project that must be brought to fruition!

Our inner city school district finds it difficult to compete with surrounding wealthy towns.

Our state is one of the wealthiest in the country; however, our district is also one of the poorest. One hundred percent of our 22,000 students receive free lunch. This is a strong indicator of the economic pressures our families and our students face every day. This year alone we lost social workers, guidance counselors, literacy coaches, and staff. These projects are essential in making up the resources that we are desperately lacking. Thank you in advance for your support!

My Project

These items will definitely make a huge difference in my students lives. Today we had a huge downpour all day long and since we are a neighborhood school, children and their families have no choice but to walk. I always prep the children the day before rain and remind them of the importance of coming to school during inclement weather. However, they all showed up today and broke my heart because they were drenched!

They were on time and WET, but ready to learn with soaked uniform pants and dripping backpacks and wet homework.

But they were there! They also had a chill in their bones since most of their uniform shirts are short sleeves because those are usually cheaper to purchase for the parents. I thought of myself dropping my own son off to his middle school and how all the "walkers" were in cars today since it rained. And how all the bus students at my sons school had been dropped off by their parents to avoid standing at the bus stop and getting wet.

My students just don't have that luxury. Many of the families do not own and car and they walk to school. Rain, or shine. But they come and they make the effort and I immediately thought that my family would make sure they had umbrellas and ponchos to get home just a little bit drier and a warm long sleeved sweater to make the walk a little bit nicer.

As we target attendance issues, we clearly notice a HUGE increase of student absences on the days it rained. Help me help them!
