If you enjoy books, your school library probably played an important role in developing that love of reading. My students are excited to come to our school library each week to search for new books to read. They are curious and voracious readers who share their joy at discovering favorite authors, familiar series, and new selections.
There is a buzz about books and an enthusiasm for reading that is felt throughout our school.
Books are so important to my students and are truly valued. I am an elementary librarian serving 350 students in Kindergarten through Grade 4. Our school library is an essential resource for my students and truly the heart of our school.
My Project
Every year our grade 4 students learn about Westward Expansion and the Oregon Trail. We would like to extend this learning through books clubs using both fiction and nonfiction texts. This requires multiple copies of titles which are not currently available in our classroom or school libraries.
Book club discussions really breathe life into the lessons students are learning about Westward Expansion and the Oregon Trail.
Being able to read stories and information from different perspectives during this period -- pioneers, Native Americans and explorers will make the unit much more engaging and well-rounded. Getting students excited about this important period in our country's development is worth supporting.
