I had the honor of meeting some of my future students before the end of the school year even though I am just starting out in the 2018-2019 school year. As someone who is just getting their first classroom, it was an amazing opportunity to see the third graders become my fourth graders at their stepping stones ceremony. Afterwards, I was able to get to know a little bit more about them. They are energetic, LOVE math and coding, and are avid readers. Although they are not diverse in appearance, it is my hope to bring as much culture to them as possible! It's going to be a fantastic year :).
My Project
A good book can make history come alive. It can paint a picture of things that happened in such a way that makes you want to learn more. The books I have chosen are meant to do just that. They follow the core subject areas of fourth grade and the theme of my classroom, nature and the world around us.
I want to immerse my students in tales that send them back through the ages.
I don't just want them to hear lectures on the Oregon Trail, I want them put themselves in the shoes of a pioneer, like in the book A Pioneer Sampler. What would it be like if they themselves were alive back in those days? What issues would they face and how would they overcome them?
Shoe Dog is an inspiring tale of an Oregonian that followed their dreams and is a local connection to encourage children to do the same. There are also the two fraction novels I chose to engage learners in math in a way that might encourage my struggling students.
Each and every book on this list has been chosen to engage, intrigue, spark curiosity, and help create understanding. My goal is to put students in the driver's seat to explore the curiosity and wonder of the world around them. Thank you for your consideration!
