One of the results of the new teacher contract in NYC is an extension of the school days, Monday - Thursday for an extra 37.5 minutes. We are taking the lowest students, those who scored a level 1 or 2 on State Testing, and doing small group work. I was allowed to pick 10 of my students who scored the lowest and do whatever I think would be the best in helping them pull up their scores. I decided that by focusing on improving reading ability, I could best impact all of their academic classes. Call me old fashioned, but I believe the best way to become a better reader is to read. With that in mind, I am starting a book club with my hand selected book club members. I want to pick really good books that they will enjoy, and I want to help them start their own personal library. I am asking for donations in terms of sets of books. A book group focused on enjoyment of reading, increasing vocabulary, understanding parts of a story, and finally building comprehension levels. With the right books and the right group of students, I am sure the reading levels of all the kids will improve.
