We're Writing About Science, Folks!

Help me give my students a new kind of writing experience! We're going to write a scientific paper in APA about bacteria that may live on their phones or laptops!

Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students are a wonderful mixture of eleventh and twelfth graders in Memphis who take college classes for credit at our dual-enrollment high school which operates in conjunction with CBU.

These students are passionate and motivated young people from all walks of life, representing the rich racial, cultural, and socioeconomic diversity of our city; they must apply in order to be accepted, even though it is a public school, which also highlights their commitment to their own education.

My students deserve the best, as they always put in their best effort!

My Project

Composition classes tend to focus on papers in MLA format, one normally used for Humanities classes. While this is fine, I want to give my students something more.

I want my students to write scientific papers in APA that are based on their own research using scientific equipment and survey data.

This kind of writing will be new to most of them, but it is a form they should learn and understand.

We need the agar and petri dishes to actually grow any bacterial culture (should any be present), and we need the swabs and gloves for obvious scientific safety and sample integrity. The hard part is up to you!
