Approximately 1 in 3 American teens are overweight or obese. In fact, obesity will soon overtake smoking as the leading cause of preventable death in America! My students need to learn about reducing sugar and fat in order to fight obesity, and I enjoy using a variety of resources to motivate them.
We are a Title I school as well as a California Distinguished School and a Schools To Watch Model Middle School.
My students are used to working hard and rising to the challenges they face. They enjoy learning and demonstrating their knowledge in unconventional ways, and they really shine when they have access to a variety of resources! The success they achieve in meeting my high standards motivates them to work even harder, then they achieve even more success. It's a great cycle, especially because healthy habits will make a lifelong impact!
My Project
The materials that I am requesting will help my students learn the importance of eating a healthy diet. The "Which Side Are You On?" kit includes a PowerPoint, a poster, and several food replicas. The PowerPoint goes through a typical day by showing the types of foods usually chosen, followed by a better, healthier choice, complete with calorie savings. The poster continues this concept by demonstrating that a quick meal can be healthy. The food replicas include examples of poor and better food choices and will be used to promote discussion between my students. All together, this "Which Side Are You On?" kit will create an integral part of our Nutrition curriculum!
This "Which Side Are You On?" kit will inspire my students to establish healthy eating habits as they compare and contrast poor and better food choices.
My students will be able to apply their knowledge in the classroom as well as anywhere that they eat. The impact of these materials will be widespread, indeed! Thank you for supporting student learning and lifelong health!
