This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My classroom is made up of 25+ seven and eight year olds. I am a second grade general education teacher who teaches in a high needs, Title I, school. Our school is new, sixth year in, replacing a school that has phased out (closed).
My students are mostly from shelters or foster homes in the area, which are all riddled with gang violence, drugs and guns.
This creates a very transient population for our school and a hardship on our dedicated staff. Our children have seen and experienced more in their short little lives than most of us could dream of in our worst nightmares.
Despite this, I want to inspire them to be better and do better. The ability to open their eyes and show them that there is more out there in the world is my goal for this school year! "A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops." ~Henry Adams
My Project
Working in this high needs school, opens my eyes to children who need. Children who need the basic essentials to get them excited about their first day of school, children who NEED to know that they are important and their first day of school is even more important!
If my students know that when they step into my classroom, there is no judgement because they can't afford a pencil or a few marble notebooks, then I know I've made a difference.
I want my second graders to start their year off on the right foot, fully stocked with the essential materials to allow them a successful school year!
When the students arrive in September they will all have pencil cases that are fully stocked with pencils, erasers and a sharpener. During the school year the manipulatives such as the coins, mini-clocks and document reader allow the learning in my classroom to be hands-on and engaging!
