Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
While repetition can be a useful teaching tool, my students crave exciting, new challenges each day. With the robust technology of an iPod touch, my students can use different apps each week to practice essential skills.
My students love new challenges, especially when they're on a fun, interactive device like an iPod.
My students this year are 4th grade intellectuals, who work tirelessly each day to prepare as they inch closer to 5th grade and then on to Middle School. They began this year with significant gaps that needed to be filled, especially in reading and basic math fluency. However, through hard work and voracious reading, my students have made major strides, and in some cases, have surpassed the levels they are supposed to be at. I want to provide my students with tools that are engaging and effective, such as iPod Touches, to continue to grow.
Our school in Nevada is Title I and is located in a high-poverty area. Almost 100% of our students are in the FRL (free or reduced lunch) program.
My Project
Every day, my students participate in center time. This is an independent work time of about 30 minutes where each of my students in is one of five groups working on a specific task. I meet with a sixth group for small-group instruction during this time. Typical activities during this time might include math facts practice, vocabulary review, creative writing, etc.
I currently own two iPod touches, and would like to have a total of six for a dedicated "iPod center." I have been able to review the educational apps available, and have found that they are fun, engaging, and relevant to the standards my students need to master this year. Examples include Math Bingo, an interactive bingo game that requires that students practice their math facts before placing on their bingo cards. For Social Studies, there is also Stack the States, which allows students to practice geography and state facts. These are a perfect fit for student practice in my classroom, and would be invaluable resource.
Your donation to this project will facilitate an engaging, interactive center time for my students.
Most of my students will need repetitive practice on math facts and vocabulary, and to review earlier grade level content, and this will provide a fun, challenging way to do so.
