My Students
Many students at my school come from literacy impoverished background. We are a high-poverty, Title I school with 100% of the student population qualifying for free and reduced rate lunch and breakfast is served in our classrooms.
Students in my groups are at or below the twentieth percentile.
These struggling learners are provided with interventions at increasing levels of intensity to accelerate their rate of learning. Expanding and learning reading and math skills, number sense, vocabulary, oral language acquisition, and building background knowledge through hands-on experiences and books are ways the struggling learners are engaged in learning in my classroom.
My Project
My small groups are moving to a larger room thus another table is needed. I have observed a horseshoe-shaped table being used during small group instruction and it is much more conducive to guided reading groups.
This table shape supports collaborative learning yet there is plenty of room for materials and enough space for separation while conferencing with students.
The horseshoe-shaped table design will also support the turn and talk strategy, partner work, and discussion during reading groups as well as allow me to reach each student. I intend to add dry erase vinyl stickers for math workspaces, spelling practice, and decoding multisyllabic words.
