Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a reading teacher of 6th and 7th grade. My students love to read and I can't stock my library fast enough!
I teach in a large urban school district.
95% of our students qualify for the free lunch program. We are a school that includes special education students in every classroom. We are a small school and use all extra funds for staff. This keeps class size small!
My Project
My students take a test each year called the NWEA. The average lexile of a 6th or 7th grade is 900-1000. I had 12 students score in the lexile range above 1300! A 1300 is typically in the 10th grade!! I do not have any books in my library above an 1100 lexile. These books would challenge my higher readers.
My students love to read.
Some will ask me to buy books for them when I go shopping! I have a great library arranged by lexiles so students can easily find a book that is comfortable for them to read. As previously stated my library is non existent for the readers above an 1100 lexile. These books will help keep my high readers reading. They will stay in my library and be a gift that will be used for many years to come.
