Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in a low-income, at risk community, where my students are not often exposed to the fun of sitting around playing games together. School becomes a drudgery of paperwork and tests, with the learning becoming rote memorization to be regurgitated onto tests.
I looped with my class of 4th graders from 3rd grade and have spent the past year with them attempting to delete the monotony of school and find creative and engaging tasks that make their learning fun! My kids are always eager to try new things and are constantly participating in class. They learned a ton last year and I am really hoping to see them continuing their improvement even more this year!
However, the challenge for me often comes to how to make my lessons continually engaging and memorable. I have found that using board games to teach reading comprehension strategies are so important! My kids don't often have the chance to sit down as a family and play games, and playing board games as a class really helps teach them good social interaction skills, while reinforcing the reading lesson of the day.
Right now, though, I only have a few board games that focus mainly on vocabulary development through context clues. I now want to expand this collection to be even more effective to reinforce strategies to my students throughout all different aspects of reading!
Lakeshore produces some engaging games. The kids love to play them and always look forward to their reading time when they get to "take a break and just play a game!". I love the games because the kids don't realize how many valuable skills they are learning while they are playing these games. I need to get more board games that focus on sequencing, main idea and other reading strategies that my kids desperately need a chance to practice. These games provide learning moments that will carry beyond the time spent in my classroom, because of their "real-life application". Rather than memorizing how to sequence for a test, children are using their strategies to compete and problem solve through a board game!
Your generous donation will provide my kids with a collection of games to provide variety to their reading groups. These games will help children problem solve and learn how to work cooperatively in play, as well as practice their reading skills. You can help my kids remember the lessons I teach them in school as they use their knowledge and apply it to their games!
