My students have a variety of severe, profound, multiple and rare disabilities. We have a diverse mix of physical and academic needs. All of my students are several years below grade level. We have students using a variety of assistive technology to move and communicate. Several of our students are non-verbal or very limited verbally.
Despite our differences in abilities, each of us is able to learn and grow at our ability level.
Although my students are several years behind, they are compassionate and loving, they have unique interests and desires, and they learn and grow every day. Because their progress is typically so slow, we celebrate every accomplishment and milestone.
My Project
My students will use the candle making kit and various candle making supplies to learn a new skill. We will sell the candles we make as a fundraiser for our Outdoor Learning Lab and field trips. It is important for teens with disabilities to be exposed to a variety of skills, projects and tasks to begin work and career readiness. The candle making business is one way to expose them to a creative new skill and help them prepare for their future. They will also learn lessons in math as we track our profits and use them for shared experiences such as field trips in our community.
