My students are getting "hooked" on favorite authors and chapter books in a series. They need additional books to continue on their path to reading success.
I am the 2nd grade inclusion teacher at the most wonderful school in the city.
Many of my students are below grade level and have severe deficits in Math and Reading. They require a lot of small group and one-on-one teaching. My students come from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds and family situations. They are learning to be a community of learners that treat each other with kindness and respect.
My Project
We are hooked on books! I build appreciation for books by reading aloud every day to my class. I model what fluent readers sound like and how good readers should think. After I share a book, my students always want more! This "hook" gets even the most reluctant readers interested in reading. The key is finding a book that can create the interest. An adequate classroom library makes books easily accessible to students. It also allows kids to spend more time browsing and looking at books. Unfortunately, books for classroom libraries can be costly. My class goes to our school library once a week. Many of the books I share are not in our school library. Also, many students finish the books they check out and have to wait another week before they can exchange for new ones. Adding additional books to our class library will allow students to continue on their reading adventure once they have been "hooked".

They are the reason I come to work every day and the reason why I work so hard at my job. I want to be able to provide for them and support them within my classroom. Therefore, in order for me to do that, I need these resources to be a successful teacher and to make a difference in their life.
