Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come to school every day with so little. From not having breakfast to not having a backpack for school, they come in and try their best despite it all. I want to deliver an amazing school environment to them that will change their education and their lives.
My students come to school every day from all five boroughs with various needs and backgrounds, despite all the challenges life has thrown at them.
Our school has over 90% of students from minority backgrounds over 85% of students receiving free or reduced lunches. Some cannot live at home with their mom or dad, and some do not even have a home to go home to. Our students grapple with all sorts of challenges, including mental health issues, domestic violence, or pregnancies. Often it is a staff member who is there for a student no matter what the situation. It is often a teacher who will show up to a basketball game to cheer them on, or bring flowers to a theater performance, or provide a collared shirt to a student going on an interview. Our students rely on us to be there for them each and every day, and we do our best to be that constant support.
My Project
My school does not have a library for our students to read books, never mind take them home. Many of our students do not even have library cards for their public library, or cannot go to them due to area violence or living situations. I want to bring the library to them by providing an in-class library for student to use during the day, and check out to read at home. This library will focus on science fiction to inspire my science students to take an interest in different areas of science and technology. So often my students say that they don't understand the connection between what they learn in class and the real world, and this will begin to close that gap. I also want to prove to my students that reading is not something that is only for English class. Many of my students only ever read when a book is assigned for class. I want to show them genres often overlooked so they can find something to pique their interest and inspire them to read.
My students need these resources because I am unable to afford to keep up with the demand from my students.
I started this by lending out my personal copies of books to students, but this is not a feasible in the long term. This mix of brand new releases and student-favorite titles will hook my students on reading and open up a variety of different scientific wonders for my students to explore.
