The inspiring students in my class are part of an inner city school made up of 647 students. At our school, eighty percent of our students are classified as high needs. FIfty-four percent are economically disadvantaged, thirty-four percent are students with disabilities, and forty-eight percent are English language learners.
My students are eager to learn and need the proper tools to do so.
Our classroom is a substantially separate kindergarten classroom for students diagnosed with Autisum. As a first year kindergarten teacher I want to make sure my students are provided with what they need to help them all be successful in meeting their individualized goals.
My Project
My kindergarten students have a difficult time learning in traditional ways as their brains process information differently. Some learn visually, using pictures instead of words to understand new concepts. Others learn best through sound or touch. It is important that I have materials and provide experiences and use various means of presentation that align with the learning styles of my special children.
I would love to create a student-centered learning environment where my children can escape to a fantastic world where books inspire and imaginations soar.
I am asking for a camping inspired book nook that I can place in a corner of my room. Of course "grass" is necessary so I am asking for a large green carpet to define the area and give a soft, comfortable base for our camping nook. Next, I am asking for two indoor play tents for my children who may become overstimulated and feel more secure in an enclosed environment. The Little Tikes Fold 'n Store Picnic Table with Market Umbrella is a four sided, sturdy plastic set that looks and feels like natural wood and can seat 6-8 children comfortably. The Kiddie Rockers table set with 2 rockers, table and matching couch complete the outdoor look with sturdy construction and a"springy" rocking motion. Rocking in a rocking chair is one of the calming activities that are recommended for children diagnosed with Autism. Finally, I am asking for a portable listening center so my auditory learners will be able to listen to stories on CD while following along with the accompanying book.
This Camping Nook is designed to meet the sensory and learning needs of my wonderful students. They will all benefit from having a relaxing, fun filled area where they can read and be read to without distraction.
