Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Can I just tell you how much I love my kindergarten class? My students rush at me the second I swing open the door to welcome them for another fun day of learning, which makes it tricky to shake their hands. I am so lucky to teach a classroom of bright, vibrant, happy kindergarteners. Our school serves a low-income community where 98% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch assistance, and walking to school can be a scary ordeal given our inner-city setting. In order to serve the needs of the community, I teach Language Arts in Spanish, with the balance of subjects taught in English. My students will be bilingual and biliterate by fourth grade – wow!
We are all aware of California’s budgetary implosion and the difficulty in finding well qualified job candidates for our scientific and high tech industries. I love math and enjoy teaching it to students in a way that will promote their understanding of mathematical relationships, not rote memorization. Kindergarten is a wonderful place to foster a love for math and science because the children are so eager to learn, practice, and teach each other their newly mastered skills and/or concepts.
My students are anxious to learn how to tell time but don’t really understand the abstractness of it. The colorful, jumbo timer will allow them to watch time elapse, which will not only reinforce the concept of time but allow them to meet deadlines while working independently. The Addition & Subtraction Machines are great learning tools that all kids love to challenge themselves on and will serve my advanced students well. Who doesn’t love playing bingo during rainy day recess? Addition Bingo, Numbers Bingo, Colors & Shapes Bingo, Money Bingo & Subtraction Bingo are sure to be hits with my kids. Students will get an instant, concrete idea of length and width using the How Long Is It? measurement center, which includes fun activity cards and the necessary manipulatives. All these learning tools can be used independently during small group time, recess, or once they have finished their ‘must-dos’.
Please help reinforce my students’ education by donating these various math manipulatives and tools to my classroom We’re all working so hard to interest the kids in school and to decrease the high school drop out rates in California. Not only will your kind donation help enrich my students’ education, but you will also be bolstering California’s future work force. Help us help all. Your generosity will be so greatly appreciated by them and by me.
Thank you for your consideration.
