Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
When you were a kid in school, didn't you look forward to art class every week so you could work with beautiful pens, paints and paper? My students make amazing art when they get the chance to work with beautiful materials. I'd love for them to have access to these things every day of the week.
My fifth graders look forward every week to art class with our school's fantastic art teacher.
She has inspired them to tap into their creativity in all aspects of their lives. Through the generous support of Donors Choose donors, she has outfitted the art room with materials that she uses to inspire all the hundreds of students she works with each week in our large, urban public school.
My students only get art class once a week for 45 minutes, and I would love to see them be able to extend their drawing and painting experience beyond that. In all the projects they work on in our regular school day, my students are constantly looking for ways to add their own creative illustrations and personal touches to their work.
My students' parents are hard-working people who want the best for their children and who look to the school to help them provide the enrichment activities that are so important to a complete education, but that are too often beyond their means.
My Project
A research project for school takes on new meaning and depth when its illustrations have been crafted by the student herself as a result of studying her subject thoroughly. The concepts behind a tessellation created in math class are better understood when a tessellation has been drawn and colored by the student as he works through the process. Science comes alive when textbook illustrations are supplemented with colorful diagrams developed through close observations.
With India ink drawing pens and watercolor paints and high-quality drawing paper, my students will be able to do all of these things and more!
These children already have a keen sense of color, thanks to their experiences in art class as well as the fiber arts work they have done with me. They have enjoyed using the wonderful colored pencils that were donated to our class last year, but those colored pencils are slowly but surely being used up, and we need to supplement them with other art materials.
We are beginning our big research project on architecture right now and will soon be planning the illustrations that will accompany the written research papers.
We've been studying the architectural drawings and illustrations of such famous architects as Frank Lloyd Wright, as well as architecture from the earliest times of human history. There's lots of illustrating to do before our project is complete, and with ink pens, watercolor paints and good quality drawing paper, it'll be a great one!
