Help me give my students a classroom area rug of the United States that will be used to help them gain a better understanding of places and locations as we study our United States History.

I teach at a small school located in a small rural community. My classroom consists of a diverse group of students who are not all motivated to learn. However, I've found that they are more willing to put forth effort when they are faced with learning opportunities that would actively engage them.
When my students take the lead and have a voice in the lesson, they succeed!
They work cooperatively and participate in meaningful discussions when they are in control of their learning. They like to use technology and other resources to discover information on their own. Now, the best part is their eagerness to share what they've learned. I love the excitement they express; therefore, I incorporate inquiry lessons a lot!
The United States map rug will serve multiple purposes in my classroom, but the ultimate way is to use it as an interactive tool to help my students understand various concepts, places, and locations during our history lessons.
It would be so cool to actually have students use the area rug map to demonstrate what they've learned in an engaging way!
Students will use yarn to outline the path taken to continue Expanding West. Also, small groups will use other materials to depict geographical features (mountain ranges, rivers, deserts, etc.) which were obstacles along the way.
In addition, the rug can be used to provide a comfy place for students to sit during class meetings, lessons, read alouds, independent reading, etc. I have seen where students have been reluctant to gather on the floor because they didn't want to sit on the hard tiles. They would sit on jackets, pillows, or something that provided comfort for them.
I know that even in addition to the ways I have already planned to use the area rug in my classroom, I will find other ways to use it to positively impact my students' learning.
