Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Last year, my classroom was fortunate to receive an iPad through generous donors here at DonorsChoose.org. We have so enjoyed using the iPad, but we have realized that having only one in the classroom has limited the number of times each week that the students can have a turn with the technology.
I teach a second grade class of twenty-three students, where the majority have a first language that is not English.
Thirteen of these twenty-three students are currently reading below grade level. To help these students close the gap in their reading level and where they need to be by the end of the year, we spend a lot of our day listening to reading (to hear readers modeling fluent reading) and working with words (to learn the nuances of the English language). We have a lot of apps on our iPad to support these goals, however with only one iPad for all twenty-three students to use, their time is limited with the device. We do have the opportunity to use the computer lab each week, but I feel that my students could benefit from additional time with technology. As a class, we participated in code.org's "hour of code" earlier this year, and we are currently learning Computer Science through code.org's tutorials. My students are so excited about learning Computer Science!
My Project
Apple iPad minis, in addition to the iPad we currently have, would enhance the educational lives of my students immediately! We already have a wealth of apps at our disposal, with new ones added frequently, but we could definitely benefit from additional devices to increase the number of students using the technology each day. Having a total of four iPads in the classroom would mean that every student would be able to have time using the devices every day! Our Language Arts and Mathematics time would be able to have a technology component as well. My students would also be able to continue their Computer Science tutorials in the classroom (outside of our weekly computer lab visits), as well as practice their new programming skills using apps like "LightBot."
My students would be so excited to find out that our classroom is receiving additional iPads.
They have been so sweet about sharing the iPad, our classroom desktop computer, and using my laptop through our interactive whiteboard with each other, even though they don't get very much time with the devices. It would be fantastic to include additional iPad minis to our current devices, as another resource for our classroom, and to provide access for each student every day!
