Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students need to be both mentally and physically fit. They come to QA after not having been successful at prior high schools. A wellness club will give them an opportunity to "destress" so that they can be more successful with their academic & social performance. We need a treadmill & weights.
Our students are "bright lights" who often times come from single family working class to poor immigrant homes.
They in many instances will be the first in their families to finish high school and or attend post secondary institutions. Many are eager to learn but face several challenges. For instance, for some English is not the primary language spoken at home and many of our students must work to help contribute to the family support. Further, some students have been affiliated with gangs, like Blood & Cripps and the YB (Young Bosses) and YG (Young Gunners) and the Latin Kings, often for survival purposes. My students yearn for positive role models and for activities such as a wellness club that can provide positive support. To create our wellness club we need several tools. Among those tools are the following:yoga mats, exercise machines, jump ropes, weights, DVDs that teach meditation and yoga techniques. Cerebral music CDs (jazz, etc.) create a calm and contemplative mood.
My Project
I'm requesting items items such as yoga mats that will give my students an opportunity to learn stretching and Yoga techniques so they learn how to relax. Secondly, as many of my students have illnesses such as diabetes and too much body fat. Their also consists of too much carbohydrates and fat. They need aerobic exercise equipment such as a treadmill, jump ropes, a rowing exercise machine, free weights, a calisthenics stretching bar as well as other exercise equipment so students can workout and get healthy. Our Flushing campus does not have a gym! Students get their gym credits by playing board games and when it's not too cold the gym teacher takes them outdoors to the local park.
My Wellness Club will do an enormous service to the students in our school.
While the male students sometimes engage in sports such as basketball and soccer in their communities, often times the girls engage in no aerobic type of activities and develop health issues. A wellness club will improve the energy level and health of our students allowing them to be more academically successful because they will be less "slouchy" and more energetic and focus. Studies show that healthy bodies & minds...
