I work at a preschool with students ages four and five. Our preschool is district run and serves many students with various disabilities. Our school's goal is help as many of these students catch up to their typically developing peers before kindergarten as possible. We follow the Utah Preschool Core Curriculum as well as the High Scope Curriculum. Being in a preschool means lots of hands on projects and exploration throughout the day. Children this age learn through play and active engagement in their day. This makes for fun filled days that planned by the teacher to be child centered and still allow for the children to help guide the outcome of each day.
My Project
My students need a new group writing center desk that is just their size along with Snap-Together Letter Blocks Magic Board Printing Practice Cards, and Lakeshore Magic Board that are developmentally appropriate. Our current writing center is collecting dust. The oversize desk that only fits one child at a time and has little, to no appeal to the children in my classroom. Preschoolers love to interact with each other and the current writing center does not allow this to happen. I would love to create a welcoming writing center for my students where everything is just their size and the supplies are developmentally appropriate.
"But it's only a big pencil--True enough but once you learn to use it, there's no end to what you can do" -The Phantom Tollbooth.
Preschoolers love to 'write' notes to their parents and stories to share. Having a new writing center would help the author inside each child to flourish and create a love for writing that will benefit them in the years to come. This center will be a print rich environment where children can experience the power of the written word.
Although children develop writing abilities at different rates, they follow similar developmental stages. Children express their ideas and feelings symbolically, beginning with drawings or squiggles which symbolize words. Eventually, these squiggles begin to approximate letter shapes. Later, as children begin to learn about letters, random letters will begin to appear in their writing. Finally, letters will be used purposefully, after the child has developed an association between letters and their sounds.
Help us have a new writing center where students can grow and developed new skills as they explore the world of writing.
