Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The school I service is a Title I school. My students are of low income families, with majority of homes speaking English as a second language. They are turning 5 or are already 5 years old going on 6. My students are all receiving services of Speech, some cases Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Counseling, have been given a classification of Autism, Emotionally Disturbed (Intermittent Explosive Disorders)and/or may have intellectual disabilities.
Most of the students who will enter my class this year have received Early Intervention services from as young as a few days old.
Their parents have been advocating for them since day 1 and are now trusting in me to provide their children with the adequate environment and education, individualized for each child as they begin their first years in school. This is a trust to which I do not take lightly!
As I prepare to take on the challenges that will be presented to me this September with an open heart and sound mind. I look to all of you to help support me in providing what should be a given right to every child in NYS; a supplied classroom with the academic and welcoming environment to meet all their needs.
My Project
Walking into a book store welcomes you to the exploration of picking books in genre and subject. A classroom should do the same! This is why I have picked a welcoming library with baskets to display my classroom books. Students currently can't see what they are picking and the books are bent over to try and fit them in the shelves. This new library will give optimum space and a esthetic location for students to shop for books.
In order for the commute to be convenient for students who borrow books nightly and do not have a book bag, we will use these book baggies to help them commute.
While we read in small groups we can now use the wonderful choice seating. This will provide my students the ability to sit the way they feel to be comfortable and find learning to be more pleasurable.
