Welcoming Classroom

Help me give my students a nice, bright rug so they are able to leave their desks and come together to learn, and snacks for our end of the day snack break if they forget to bring one.

My Students

I am a first-year teacher to a fun group of 2nd graders in a rural school. This group of students is experiencing its first "normal" school year, as it was the kindergarten class that went home in the spring of 2020. The last couple years, paired with the socioeconomic status of many of my students, makes for a great stress in their lives at such a young age. It is my goal to make my classroom an enjoyable, welcoming place where they can hopefully relax and feel comfortable while learning.

Although some of my students come from less than desirable situations, you would never know it from the way they show their big hearts and bright smiles.

My Project

The area rug will be used sometimes during whole group teaching. It will give the students a chance to get away from their desks and have alternative seating. It is sometimes easier for children to focus and be engaged when they are together on a rug, rather than spread across the classroom in desks. I will also be able to utilize the rug space during small group time. The rug will make a great addition to the classroom, that will add color and make the room more comfortable. We can also use the rug during snack time at the end of each day. I have also requested extra snacks. Sometimes students do not bring a snack. It may be that they forget it one day, or it may be that they do not have extra to be able to bring a snack to school. Whatever the reason, I like to have extra snacks on hand so that none of my students do without.

Having a new, brightly colored rug for the children to come together to learn and extra snacks if they're hungry, is just another way for their environment to be more inviting.
