Ms. McGarry from Indianapolis IN is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need more leveled books to help improve their reading fluency, and a new timer to help with their time management during lesson time.

I have 3 wishes for my class. To become better readers, be able to manage their time, and to think of school as a warm and welcoming place to take risks and become life long-learners. Please help my wishes for my class to come true.
I have 24 students.
I have been truly blessed this year with a wonderful group of students. They all get along and truly care about each other. I have a multicultural class. There are 9 English Language Learners in our room. Our school is a Title One school. We have over 80% free or reduced students in our building. This means that most of our students are in the lower socio-economic spectrum. Most of my students did not attend preschool. At the start of the year 6 of my students could only speak a little English. Half of my students could not recognize their upper and lower case letters or the sounds of the letters. All of my student's literacy skills have improved a lot this year.
The leveled books that I am requesting will help improve my students reading and fluency level. My students take a book in a bag home every night to read to their parents. Inside of the bag is a list of questions the parents ask their children about the book. Such as; character, setting, title author, sight words... Students have to read at a Level D or 4 by the end of kindergarten as stated by the Common Core Standards. Half of my class is still reading at a level A or B. Because they did not go to preschool and are not read to everyday they come to us with very poor literacy skills. The more they read the better reader they will become. We have a Timer just like the one I am requesting, but it is on its last leg. The clock helps teach my students time management skills. During Readers Workshop time they can see how much more time they have to read their books or get their activity done. The dry erase board welcomes my students by teaching a language or math concept
More books in my students hands = more reading = better reading fluency = increased reading levels.
A working timer in our classroom = better time management by my students = getting their work done on time = happier students and teacher. A new "Welcome Board" = a friendly hello, a great way for our class to start the day and review a language or math standard.
