My Students
My classes consist of a multitude of special needs, ESL, and "at-risk" students in the urban district of Jersey City, NJ. Whereby the existence and hardships of poverty, racial and ethnic diversity, immigration, and overpopulation strike through our classrooms. With our learning being 100% virtual come this September, I would like to enhance our connections. I want to continue to reinforce that taking care of themselves emotionally, physically, and mentally, is just as important as taking care of their academics.

Welcoming a new school year is stressful enough, welcoming it virtually, will be a whole new challenge. Mindfulness activities were always a daily routine in our classrooms and school-wide activities. My goal is to continue these practices so that they may implement into their daily routines at home.
My Project
In March 2020, my students and I left our classroom with lots of love and energy towards our learning. During the pandemic, we endured lots of challenges, but we still were able to sustain our daily check-ins and academic responsibilities. It truly was a challenging time for all of us. Reflecting upon this time, I got to see that my students needed more. These check-ins were geared more towards how they were doing emotionally, rather than academically. Remote learning presented many challenges to our whole well-being. With perseverance, we were able to find our ways to adapt and continue to support one another. With a virtual school return, I want to be prepared in giving my students more. I am requesting books and activities to support mindfulness and calm in the coming school year.
With these added materials, we will be able to strengthen our remote learning experiences inside and out.
I will be able to present more opportunities and activities geared towards strengthening our academic, social, and emotional learning. These daily integration of lessons will give my students the skills they need to recognize and manage their emotions, demonstrate caring and concern for others, establish positive relationships, make responsible decisions, and manage challenging situations. Assisting them to understand these concepts will equip them with the tools they need to manage their experiences at school, home, and in their community.
