I am a 2nd year teaching fellow, and I teach 2nd grade in East New York. All of my students receive free school lunch. As a NYC public school teacher I am required to have a carpet in my classroom. I had no problem with this when I began teaching. I even brought an old vacuum into school so that I could keep the carpet clean, since custodians do not clean classroom carpets. I ran into a problem with the carpet late last year, when a new student was transferred into my class. This student was a troubled young boy, and would often have bathroom accidents on the carpet. I reported these accidents to the custodians, who would then come to the room, but I saw no evidence of proper cleaning, such as shampooing the carpet, etc. I feel terribly about having this year's students sit on this carpet, but I am left with no choice, as I will face consequences for not following the literacy prototype. Also, the kids really do enjoy reading on the carpet. I would like to provide my students with a new carpet for the classroom, one that goes with the overall rainforest/jungle theme of our classroom. I am concerned for my students' overall well-being, and I would like for them to be able to learn in a safe, clean, and pleasant environment.
