My Students

I teach students in an Alternative Program in a rural school in Alaska.

My students were recruited from recent students who had failed or dropped out of high school.

Rural Alaska has a high drop-out rate. Most of the 20+ students in my program are over 18. Several have been jailed recently. Four are teen moms or dads. About half have problems with alcohol or drugs.

My Project

Earlier DonorsChoose supported our production of a sign for our village airport. The old sign was very old with many misspelled words. Our sign will be colorful with pictures drawn by our students celebrating our local culture. Production on the new sign is going well and we are quite excited.

Because our remote location in Alaska, there are no roads into our village from the outside world.

Everyone who arrives at our village arrives at the airport. This bright new sign will give my students a sense of pride in their village, in their culture, and pride in their own accomplishment. The Plexiglass will protect this new artwork from the outside elements, which can be severe in our Alaskan village.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
