Our students often see reading as a challenge instead of as an opportunity to explore new lands, meet new people, learn in a fun way through books. They come from diverse backgrounds and have often seen too much already in their everyday lives.
The students at our school have so much untapped potential.
When I see them get excited about a book, it warms my heart. They then share their excitement with others which are a contagion of which we need more. They are excited to get out and see the world when they have an opportunity. Books can take them places that they've never been before and inspire them to reach higher. Books are also a great escape. Sometimes, that is exactly what our students need.
Having class sets allow us to read together and for everyone to be able to see the text, have a chance to read and be successful.
As a class, we get to engage with the books together.
We can discuss the characters, what motivates them, themes, conflict, and other elements of literature. Class and peer discussions reinforce students' understanding of the text. Everyone in the class will have a sense of accomplishment each time we finish a book.
Students will get to travel into the wonderful imagination of Neil Gaiman and enjoy the artwork of Chris Riddell. I hope that it will encourage the students to explore a variety of other books and genres.
My project says that it will reach 100 students this year, but our school is much bigger. I will loan out the sets to any teacher who also wants to share Neil Gaiman and Chris Riddell with their students.
