Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Most of us were fortunate enough to start first grade with a bookbag filled with the essentials : pencils, crayons, glue, scissors, notebooks and folders. Unfortunately, alot of students in my school arrive on the first day of school with no backpack let alone any school supplies. You can help!

Each year, about 100 first grade students come to school on the first day eager and excited to see their new classrooms and meet their new teachers.

Although they are filled with excitement and curiosity about the year ahead, most of them are sent into school empty handed. They have no backpack, school supplies or any other materials to call their own. Alot of parents can barely afford uniforms for their students so providing them with school supplies to last the year is usually not an option. Despite this deficit, the students want to learn and make their teachers and parents proud. Despite sending out school supply lists or asking parents in person, the amount of supplies we receive each year is very limited. Our class sizes are growing and for the past 4 years I have had over 30 students in my class with no assistance. The students at my school want to learn but need the necessary supplies to supplement their curriculum.

My Project

I am hoping to start next school year with back to school bags for each of my students. Within these bags, students will have their own pencils, scissors, crayons, folders, and journals. The cost of providing writing and art supplies for over 30 students for an entire school year is alone a large endeavour. After purchasing these supplies for my students, there are barely any funds left to provide my students with notebooks and other learning materials. I would love for each student to have their own draw and write journal, story book template, and hands on activity cards that correlate with the common core curriculum. The journals and story books would allow my students an opportunity to develop and strengthen their writing skills as well as their creativity. I am also requesting a set of math and language arts activity cards to use with my students throughout the school year to strengthen the skills they are lacking but need in order to be academically successful.

Providing my students with their own set of school supplies and learning activities will let them know they have a teacher who cares about them and wants them to be successful.

Most students at my school depend on what they receive from their teachers since there is very little parent support or interest in their child's learning. I want to show my students that although they may not have much at home they are still worth teaching and deserve the best in their education.
