Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Try to remember your first day of high school. Were you wondering if you would make friends and who your teachers might be? Now, imagine on top of that being brand new to the country and to San Francisco. All of the students I work with are newcomers to the US and my job is to support them.
My students and their families have all been in the country for less than three years.
As a counselor, I work exclusively with these students to welcome them to the US and also help them to get acclimated to school culture. Our school is an urban public school in California. It has one of the most diverse student bodies including 15% African American, 24% Chinese, and 38% Latino students. Over seventy percent of our students are on free and reduced price lunch which is a federal poverty indicator. In addition, 14% of our students are in Special Education, 38% speak English as their second language, and 19% are newcomers to the country. About 88% of our graduating seniors were accepted into college last year which is a remarkable gain over the rate a decade ago.
My expectation is that regardless of when my students entered the US, they will all go on to college and succeed in work and life. My goal is to help them get the resources and support they need to achieve this success, learn English, and thrive as new high school students.
My Project
When my students come to school for the first time, it is often not at the traditional start of the year. My students enter school soon after they arrive in this country, and this happens throughout the school year. When my students arrive to school, they often feel disjointed and not entirely confident in the journey they are about to embark on as high school students. My students' families are trying to acclimate to life in the city and get settled.
I would like to offer my families and students a welcome bag when they arrive and meet with me for the first time. The welcome bag will include practical items such as handheld translators (something that my current students find invaluable), a map of the city, a binder, school supplies, and some materials from the high school with our school mascot. In many cultures, a gift is a way to extend a welcome and I would like to offer such a welcome to my students and their parents when they arrive to school.
My students need 30 English/Spanish translators, 10 binders, and 7 tote bags for welcome bags because they and their families are new to the school and country.
My students are hardworking, filled with anticipation about high school life, and they are driven to succeed.
My students and their families face many obstacles but they do not allow these obstacles to block their path to success. The project is important because it serves two purposes. It provides practical tools and supplies as well as demonstrates to the new students that they are welcome and supported and that their families have a place in the school community.
