Help me give my students some reading material that they are interested in reading along with a game that will encourage reading and will help them with social and conversation skills.
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to help them develop an interest in school and learning. All my students are below grade level in reading and are struggling in their classes. I am starting a new job this school year and will be working with students who have been identified with dyslexia. Several of my students also have trouble focusing for longer than a few minutes. Education is not a priority in many of their homes and isn't valued.
My Project
My students struggle to read and find little to no enjoyment with reading. They do however LOVE the Weird But True books. The limited words on the page along with the pictures make reading fun for my kids. I have several of these books and they are falling apart from all the use they have gotten this year.
These books hold a wealth of information that we use as topics of research and discussions.
We can take one page and use it to help develop social and conversation skills as we discuss the information. These can also be used as a way to get the kids excited about research. They will read about it in the book and then want to research and learn more about what they have read.
